There are around 478,000 ponds in the countryside of the UK, providing unique and biodiverse wildlife habitat. Sadly many of these ponds are threatened by pollution, drainage, development and climate change. However it is estimated there are around an additional 2-3 million garden ponds. These small waterbodies can provide fantastic habitat for wetland plants and animals, and provide important links between fragmented wildlife communities.
One of the best things you can do for wildlife is to dig a garden pond! Please use this guidance produced by Freshwater Habitats Trust to help you make the best possible garden pond for wildlife.
Please see the Freshwater Habitats Turst’s Pond Creation Toolkit for information on how to create clean water ponds in an array of habitats for wildlife.
